John A. Smith Papers, 1862-1865
The Smiths were a farm family from Mt. Pleasant in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. Three of the five letters in this collection were written by John A. Smith (b. ca. 1835), who served as a corporal in Co. F, 1st North Carolina Cavalry. John was writing to his sister Mary C. Smith (b. ca. 1846). The other two letters were written by another brother, James M. Smith (b. ca. 1847), who served as a private in Co. E, 2nd NC Junior Reserves.
