Smallwood Jefferson Dalton
Smallwood Jefferson Dalton (b. ca. 1813) was a farmer from Grove Station, Greenville District, South Carolina. Three sons of Dalton and his wife, Rebecca Eskew Dalton (b. ca. 1811), served in the Confederate Army. William McCrager Dalton (b. ca. 1836) enlisted in Co. I, 3rd South Carolina Infantry in July 1862 and died of typhoid fever on January 7, 1863. Amos Harrison Dalton (b. ca. 1842) enlisted in Co. F, Infantry Regiment, Hampton Legion on September 4, 1861. He was captured at Chattanooga on October 29, 1863 and died of chronic diarrhea at Camp Morton, Indiana on March 23, 1864. Lewis Rector Dalton (b. ca. 1845) enlisted in Co. F, Infantry Regiment, Hampton’s Legion on April 1, 1864. L. R. Dalton survived the war and by 1870 was residing in neighboring Pickens County.
