Thomas A. Bell (b. ca. 1837) was from Augusta County, Virginia, where he lived on the family farm. He mustered into service as a private in Co. C, 5th Virginia Infantry on June 30, 1861 and was killed at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House on May 12, 1864. The letters are written to his older sister, Francis (Fannie) Bell.
