William Harmon Harden Papers, 1861-1865

William Harmon Harden (b. ca. 1836) was a farmer from Pike County, Georgia. At the time of the Federal Census of 1860, Harden was living in the household of his parents, Hilliard and Mary Harden, who owned a farm in Pike County. In the census, William H. Harden’s occupation was listed as “teacher in common schools.”He was married, ca. 1861, to Nancy (Cooper?). Harden served as a private in Co. G, 63rd Georgia and was eventually promoted to corporal. The 63rd GA served as infantry and heavy artillery on the coast before being transferred to the Army of Tennessee. Harden survived the war and in 1870, he and Nancy were living on their small Pike County farm with their three young children.
