Biography:
James Halloway (b. ca. 1842) lived with his family in Layfayette, Chambers County, Alabama. His father Joseph H. Williams (1808-1886), born in Tennessee, was a farmer and “ambrotype artist.” He had at least eleven siblings. He and a younger brother served in the Confederacy. James enlisted in Co. I, 47th Alabama Infantry on April 18, 1862. He was promoted to sergeant on July 1, 1864 and surrendered at Appomattox.
