Freland N. Holman
Freland N. Holman (b. ca. 1835) was a carpenter from Dixfield Center, Oxford County, Maine. He mustered into service as a private in Co. L, 1stMaine Cavalry on November 1, 1861. He was promoted to corporal in 1862, reenlisted on December 31, 1863, and promoted to sergeant in 1864. The 1stMaine Cavalry sustained the highest loss in killed in action or died of wounds of any cavalry regiment in the Union Army: 174 officers and enlisted men. Another 344 died of disease, by accident, or as prisoners of war. Freland Holman was taken prisoner at St. Mary’s Church, Virginia on June 24, 1864 and died a prisoner of war at Savannah, Georgia (date and cause of death not recorded). He was the son of farmer Luther Holman (b. ca. 1800) and his wife Olive (b. ca. 1805) and the sister of Isabella Holman.
