William Culbertson (b. ca. 1829) was a farmer from Bridgewater, Williams County, Ohio. He was 35 years old when he was mustered in as a corporal in Company H, 38th Ohio Infantry on August 30, 1862. He also served for a short time in the 1st Battalion, Pioneer Brigade, Army of the Cumberland. He was discharged for disability on October 15, 1863 and died sometime before the census of 1870. The letters are written to his wife, Julina Culbertson.
