James Gordon Hamilton
James Gordon Hamilton (b. ca. 1839) served as a corporal in Co. L, 4th Pennsylvania Cavalry. At the time of the 1860 Census, James was living on the Butler County farm owned by his mother, along with two sisters, Mary (b. ca. 1842) and Isabelle A. Hamilton (b. ca. 1848). James mustered into service on November 1, 1861 and was eventually promoted to corporal. He was captured on October 12, 1863, confined at Richmond before being transferred to Andersonville prison camp in Georgia, where he died on April 20, 1864 (his service records mistakenly record that he mustered out on October 31, 1864 at the end of his three-year enlistment). James Hamilton is buried at the National Cemetery at Andersonville.
