Biography:
John Guest (b. ca. 1843) was the son of Catherine Guest (b. ca. 1806) and the brother of William Guest (b. ca. 1836), Ellen Guest, and Isaac Guest. At the time of the 1860 Census, John Guest was living nearby his mother and brother in the household of wealthy farmer Isaac Van Leer. John Guest mustered into service as a private in Co. A, 97th Pennsylvania Infantry on August 22, 1862. His regiment was stationed on the coasts of South Carolina and Florida until April 1864, when it was transferred to Virginia. The regiment was soon involved in the fighting around Petersburg, where John Guest was killed in action on July 4, 1864.
