Biography: 

Andrew Jackson Copenhaver (b. ca. 1841) was a farm laborer from the Seven Mile Ford section of Smyth County, Virginia. He enlisted as a private in Co. A, 8th Virginia Cavalry on May 27, 1861 and was reported absent without leave from September 20 to October 21, 1864. He deserted in Smyth County on March 6, 1865 and was sent to Louisville, where he took the Oath of Allegiance on April 5, 1865. At the time of the 1870 Census, Copenhaver was married and living in neighboring Tazewell County, Virginia.
