Amos Family Papers

Richard Amos (b. ca. 1810) was a tobacco farmer from the Ayresville neighborhood of Rockingham County, North Carolina, although at the time time of the Federal Census of 1860, the family was living in neighboring Stokes County. Richard Amos and his wife, Ann (b. ca. 1808), had four sons: Peter (b. ca. 1833), William (b. ca. 1835), James (b. ca. 1838), and Henry (b. ca. 1839). James and Henry enlisted in Co. L, 21st North Carolina Infantry on July 25, 1862. Henry served as a private and died of disease at Mt. Jackson, Virginia on January 2, 1863. James served as a corporal and was wounded and captured at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. He died of his wounds on July 27. Peter Amos also served in the Confederate Army, but his regiment and his fate are uncertain. The collection also includes letters from Richard’s older brother, Francis (b. ca. 1803), who had moved to Indiana in the 1830s, and from two of Richard Amos’ Rockingham County neighbors who were serving in the Confederate Army.
