Thomas T. Bigbie
Thomas T. Bigbie (1837-1864) was born in Abbeville District, South Carolina. His family moved to Alabama in the late 1840s or early 1850s and eventually settled in Dale County. He had a twin brother named Benjamin Franklin Bigbie (1837-1864). Thomas married Mary Jane Lewis (1843-1921) on December 5, 1861. Bigbie enlisted in in the “Daleville Blues,” Co. G, 33rd Alabama Infantry on May 15, 1862. His twin brother enlisted in Co. E, 15th Alabama Inafntry. Thomas was promoted to sergeant following the Battle of Chickamauga “for gallantry on the Battlefield.” He died of scurvy and dysentery at Camp Douglas Prison Camp in Illinois on October 18, 1864. He was buried at the Chicago City Cemetery. His twin Benjamin was also captured and held as a prisoner of war at Point Lookout, Maryland. He, too, died of disease and was buried at the Point Lookout Confederate Cemetery.
