James and Robert Williams Letters

The Williams family lived in Layfayette, Chambers County, Alabama. Joseph H. Williams (1808-1886), born in Tennessee, was a farmer and “ambrotype artist.” He and his wife, Mary (b. Kentucky ca. 1825), had at least eleven children. Their two eldest sons served in the Confederate Army: James Halloway and Robert Williams. James Halloway Williams (b. November 13, 1842) enlisted in Co. I, 47th Alabama Infantry on April 18, 1862. He was promoted to sergeant on July 1, 1864 and surrendered at Appomattox. Robert Williams (b. ca. 1844) enlisted in the “Gilmore Guards,” Co. E, 14th Alabama Infantry on September 2, 1861. It is unclear if Robert survived the war.
