Neves Family Papers
The Neves family was from the Mush Creek neighborhood of Greenville District, South Carolina. Alsey Albert (b. ca. 1815) and Ann (b. ca. 1810) had at least ten children, though some did not survive childhood. Three of their sons served in the Confederacy. William P. Z. F. Neves (b. ca. 1835), John Pool Neves (b. ca. 1838), and George Washington Neves (b. ca. 1841) belonged to Co. A (later Co. H), 3rd Battalion, Palmetto Light Artillery. William and John both enlisted on August 15, 1861; G. W. joined his bothers in January 1862. William was elected second lieutenant in July 1863. All three brothers survived the war. Their siblings included Frances (b. ca. 1842) and Benjamin Franklin Neves (b. ca. 1852), who wrote them during the war. The collection also includes letters by relatives and neighbors from Greenville District, as well as cousins who lived in Haywood County, North Carolina.
