Thomas Bigbie Papers

Thomas T. Bigbie (1837-1864) was born in Abbeville District, South Carolina. In the 1870 Census, Thomas T. Bigbie’s father, also named Thomas, was listed in the household of a daughter, Margarett. The elder Bigbie was born in South Carolina, ca. 1795, and his occupation was listed as “farm laborer” in the Census. Margarett was born in Georgia, ca. 1843. The family moved to Alabama in the late 1840s or early 1850s and eventually settled in Dale County. Thomas T. Bigbie married Mary Jane Lewis (1843-1921) on December 5, 1861. Bigbie enlisted in in the “Daleville Blues,” Co. G, 33rd Alabama Infantry on May 15, 1862. He was promoted to sergeant following the Battle of Chickamauga “for gallantry on the Battlefield.” His brother, Lewellen W. Bigbie, served with him in Co. G., as did two of his brother-in-laws, Charles and Lewis, both of whom died in the war. Thomas Bigbie was taken prisoner on July 22, 1864 in the fighting around Atlanta. He died of scurvy and dysentery at Camp Douglas Prison Camp in Illinois on October 18, 1864.
