Athey Family Letters

George, Emily, and W. C. (Champion) Athey were from Ramah, Montgomery County, Alabama.   Their father, William Athey, was born in South Carolina about 1806.   The younger Atheys were all born in Alabama.  The 1860 census lists George’s age as 26, Emily’s as 20, and Champion’s as 15.  George served in Co. K, 22nd Alabama Infantry and was mortally wounded at the Battle of Nashville and buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Davidson County on December 23, 1864.  W. C. Athey served in Co. C, 3rd Battalion, Hillard’s Legion (which later became part of the 60th Alabama Infntry).  He was wounded and taken prisoner at Drewry’s Bluff, Virginia on April 6, 1865 and paroled on July 1.  Josiah B. Athey (b. ca. 1841) was from Mt. Ida, Pike County, Alabama.  His father, Henry Athey, was a younger brother of William Athey, and was born in South Carolina about 1809.  Like his cousins, J. B. was born in Alabama.  He served in the 15th Battalion, Alabama Partisan Rangers (later merged into the 56th Regiment Alabama Partisan Rangers) and died at Columbus, Mississippi in 1863 from measles.
