Marcus Hefner Papers

John Marcus Hefner (b. ca. 1833) was a farmer from the Flint Rock section of Catawba County, North Carolina. The family name is also spelled Haffner, and Marcus Hefner’s name was recorded as Huffman in the Federal Census of 1860, perhaps through confusion with family name common in Catawba County. In 1860, Hefner resided with his wife, Kezia (b. ca. 1828). and their three young sons, Lawrence (b. ca. 1855), Jonas (b. ca. 1857), and James (listed as 8 months old in September 1860). Marcus Hefner enlisted as a private in Co. E, 57th North Carolina Infantry on July 4, 1862. He deserted some time prior to September 1, 1863, was court martialed in January 1864, and returned to duty prior to May 1, 1864. Hefner was captured near Cold Harbor on June 6, 1864 and was confined at Point Lookout prison camp where he died on July 27, 1864 (cause not reported).
