Fisher Family Papers

The Fisher family lived in the Sherrill’s Ford section of Catawba County, North Carolina. At the time of the 1860 Federal Census, David Fisher (b. ca. 1803) and Elizabeth Fisher (b. ca. 1819) were living on their Catawba County farm with their four daughters and one son. Most of the letters in this collection were written to two of the daughters, Lavinia “Viney”Fisher (b. ca. 1838) and Elizabeth Amanda “Mandy” Fisher (b. ca. 1843) by a number of relatives and former neighbors serving in the Confederate Army. Among these are cousin James Fisher, who served in the 23rd NC Inf., L. L. Houk, who served in the 6th NC Inf., T. B. Litten, who served in the 5th NC Cav., and J. C. Hill, who served in the 49th NC Inf. with William J. Fisher (b. ca. 1846), the younger brother of Viney and Mandy Fisher. L. L. Houk was killed at Antietam on September 17, 1862. James Fisher died near Fredericksburg on April 2, 1863 (cause not reported). J. C. Hill was wounded at Malvern Hill on July 1, 1862 and again at Drewry’s Bluff on May 16, 1864. Hill died of his wounds at Richmond on June 6, 1864.
