Furniaful George Papers, 1861-1877

Brice George (b. NC ca. 1811) was a Wayne County, Georgia farmer. At the time of the 1860 Federal Census, Brice George and his wife, Mahala (b. GA ca. 1815) had eight children living at home, ages 6-22. Most of the letters in this collection were written by brothers Furniaful George (b. ca. 1840) and David George (b. ca. 1842) while they were serving in Co. A, 29th Georgia Infantry. Furniaful George was captured in the fighting around Atlanta on July 22, 1864. He was a prisoner at Camp Chase, Ohio and was paroled and exchanged in March 1865. Furniaful and David had four sisters and two younger brothers. In the 1860 Census, the sisters’ names and ages were recorded as: Fereba 22, Sarah 13, Louisa 11, and Mily 6. The younger brothers were John Alexander (also spelled Elexander) 15 and Daniel 8. John E. George served as a private in Co. F, 47th Georgia Infantry.
