John H. Hartman Papers, 1850-1865
At the time of the 1860 Federal Census, Adam Hartman (b. ca. 1819) and his wife, Malinda (b. ca. 1820), were living on their Rowan farm with their four sons and one daughter. Two of the Hartmans’ sons, Daniel (b. ca. 1840) and John (b. ca. 1841), enlisted in Co. D, 1st North Carolina Artillery (James Reilly’s Battery, Rowan Artillery) on March 19, 1862. Most of the letters in this collection were written by John H. Hartman to his young wife, Partha Hartman (b. ca. 1843).
