Governor Zebulon Baird Vance Papers
These letters are from Confederate soldiers to Governor Zebulon Baird Vance, who won the gubernatorial election in fall 1862. He had been a Confederate military officer prior to his political position. He was frequently in opposition to the Confederate federal government, as he opposed conscription and continued to observe the right of habeas corpus while none of the other Confederate states did.
